Indonesia threatens to ban BlackBerry over porn content

Indonesia threatens to ban BlackBerry over porn content
Indonesia has threatened to close BlackBerry service in the country if it refuses to block pornographic content.

Indonesian Communication and Information Minister Tifatul Sembiring said Tuesday that he had requested the Canada- based Research In Motion, the maker of BlackBerry, to block adult content for its service in the country, Xinhua said, citing local media reports.

"If they are still not responding to our request, we have to close it down," the minister said.

According to the minister the banning on pornographic site on the internet is in line with the countrys 2008 anti-pornography law. "RIM may violate our law if it remains providing porn content in its service (in Indonesia)," Tifatul said

U2's gig In Moscow Shut Down

U2's gig In Moscow Shut Down
August 30, 2010
It has been reported, that Wednesday night, on the eve of U2's debut show in Moscow, the Russian police arrested several activists from the Amnesty International. These individuals were outside the venue and were seen collecting signatures and also handing out leaflets.

Amnesty however were not the only organization that was effectively kicked out of the venue, U2's very own charity organization that goes by the ONE campaign were also thrown out. ONE campaign is something that deals with the awareness in AIDS.

Amnesty International's Moscow officer Sergei Nikitin said that it was strange as well as sad to see that the Russian governments weren't afraid to see people even collect signatures and other such stuff.

He further added that U2 singer Bono was one of the organizers. He also said that it was just a publicity event that Amnesty does in every city where the band has performed.

U2 vocalist and chief songwriter, Bono met with the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to talk about the prevention of the spread of HIV.

He reportedly praised Medvedev as sociable on stage, however he surprised all after he invited Yury Shevchuk, who happens to be a Russian rock star, infamous for his attacks on the Kremlin to play the Bob Dylan's classic 'Knocking On Heaven's Door'.

India may send aid to Pakistan through UN

India may send aid to Pakistan through UN

New Delhi/Islamabad, Aug 28 (IANS) India is likely to send its aid to flood victims in Pakistan through the United Nations, as sought by the Pakistan government Saturday.

'Once Pakistan accepted our offer, then we were working out the modalities. If Pakistan wants us to send it through UN, we have no problem with that,' said a senior official in the Indian ministry of external affairs in New Delhi.

Earlier, Pakistani Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit told Pakistani news channel, Dunya TV: 'We have conveyed to India that they can send their aid to us through UN,' noting the UN was the flagship organisation for all foreign aid pouring into the country from different parts of the world for flood-hit people.

India offered an aid of $5 million to assist the rehabilitation of over 20 million displaced people in Pakistan following flash floods that started July 28 and continue to rock the infrastructure across the country. More than 1,600 people have died this month.

Pakistan had earlier shown reluctance to accept the Indian offer.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called up his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani Aug 19 to reiterate the offer. Finally, Pakistan's Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi confirmed to media in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly's special session, Aug 20 that Pakistan has decided to accept the offer.

The gesture was widely welcomed. Later the Pakistani prime minister sent five boxes of mangoes to Manmohan Singh to say thanks.

Despite the lapse of more than a week since accepting the offer, Pakistan and India could not agree on the modalities for transporting the aid material. Finally, Pakistan decided against accepting the Indian offer directly Saturday and the same was conveyed to the Indian government.

'We have asked them to hand over this assistance package to the UN organisations who are working in India as well,' Abdul Basit said.

He, though, expressed reluctance to give any reason for this diplomatic snub. 'We have appreciated the offer but it'll not be appropriate to publicly discuss the reasons involved in deciding to route it through UN,' he said.

Sun Core's solar products

October 14th, 2009, 6:54 pm · posted by Ian Hamilton

SunCore is a little known Irvine-based company that’s on the cusp of shipping some potentially revolutionary technology.

SunCore’s products charge cell phones using light.

That’s “light” power and not “solar” power.

What’s the difference? SunCore, a five-year-old company, has patent-pending technology for absorbing light along with a “high-rate charge transfer” that makes it possible to charge a cell phone using room light, sunlight, or any light. Their systems get power from the entire spectrum, all the way up to ultraviolet and all the way down to infrared and are efficient enough to charge a cell phone in a normal room, according to SunCore CEO Steve Brimmer.

SunCore's upcoming Novacell external solar charger. You can plug in a mobile device and charge it via a USB connection. China gets it first, though. Photo courtesy SunCore.
According to SunCore, the company is preparing an $800,000 test order of its external Novacell chargers for China Mobile that will be followed by a $21 million order if the product is successful. Yes, China and their millions of built-in customers get this tech first.

Novacell is an external charger that will power mobile devices via a USB connection. That’s the connection found on most cell phone chargers today.

That’s not all SunCore is working on.

SunCore's embedded battery technology puts a solar cell into the battery cover of a cell phone. Photo courtesy SunCore.
The company also develops embedded light-powered batteries. Boy, that’s strange to write – light-powered. I’ll just go back to solar-powered for the rest of this post now that you know what I mean.

Virtually any phone can be retrofitted with SunCore technology before or after manufacturing. Which means the manufacturer can sell you a solar-powered phone that’s ready to go or you can rip the back off your current phone and install Suncore’s solar-powered battery yourself.

According to SunCore, cell phone maker HTC has ordered 100,000 of the company’s embedded batteries for a market test. RIM, makers of the Blackberry, are allegedly also testing out SunCore’s batteries.

“The only behavior change that we have to ask of consumers is that when they put their phone down they put it back side up. It’s actually a small change in behavior to more or less continuously charge your phone,” Brimmer said during an investment presentation at VC in the OC last week.

iPhone owners will note the iPhone doesn’t have a removable battery. You’d have to use Novacell or wait until Apple releases an iPhone with a removable battery.

Solar-powered phones are not new. They do exist and have been used for years, but there are limitations. I, for one, would never leave my phone to bake in the sun for four hours as it powers up.

Yes, this tech has the potential of uncluttering your life with one less wire to worry about, but it also has the potential of enabling more powerful applications to run on mobile phones. You’d be lucky to go a day on many of today’s smartphones given the way they suck juice if you’re watching video, listening to music or surfing the web.

Then there are the hundreds of millions of people in poorer countries who don’t have access to cheap or reliable electricity. Imagine the impact a cell phone that’s powered by light might have on those people.

I’ll be following SunCore closely and as soon as they have one of their Novacell products off the production line I’ll have hands-on impressions for you.

What do you think of this technology?

Lazy Workers
A site foreman had ten very lazy men working for him, so one day he decided to trick them into doing some work for a change. "I've got a really easy job today for the laziest one among you," the foreman announced. "Will the laziest man please put his hand up."

Nine hands went up.

"Why didn't you put your hand up?" the foreman asked the tenth man. "Too much trouble," came the reply.

The Most Colorful River In The World

The Most Colorful River In The World

The river shown in the photographs is the Caristales, which is located near the town of La Macarena in Colombia , South America .

The river, world famous for its colorful display, has been called:

"the river that ran away to paradise",

"the most beautiful river in the world"

and "the river of five colors".
During Colombia 's wet season, the water flows fast and deep, obscuring the bottom of the river and denying the mosses and algae that call the river home the sun that they need. During the dry season there is not enough water to support the dazzling array of life in the river. But during a brief span between the wet and dry seasons, when the water level is just right, the many varieties of algae and moss bloom in a dazzling display of colours. Blotches of amarillo , blue, green, black and red - and a thousand shades in between - coat the river.

The part of the river where the colourful blooms occur is quite isolated and is not accessible by road. Adventurous tourists can now fly into La Macarena and then make their way to to the river site on foot as part of guided tours. The site was effectively closed to tourists for several years because of guerrilla activity in the region along with concerns about the impact of unregulated tourist traffic. However, the site was re-opened to visitors in 2009.

So far, some 1,000 people have visited Caristales, including around 100 foreign tourists.

The tours will follow four clearly marked and authorized paths and one is no longer permitted to stay overnight or cook, as this was ruining the area previously.

Pakistan Floods Forecast to Hit Sindh Today; Millions Stranded

Pakistan Floods Forecast to Hit Sindh Today; Millions Stranded
August 05, 2010, 2:38 AM EDT

By Khurrum Anis and Anwar Shakir

Aug. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Pakistan’s deadliest floods in eight decades are forecast to hit the Southern province of Sindh today, after causing devastation in the country’s three other regions and leaving more than three million people stranded.

Water flow in the Indus River is expected to reach 1 million cubic feet per second, 10 times the norm, by tonight, Khair Mohammed Kalwar, director of operations at the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, said by telephone from Karachi. Nineteen of the 23 Sindh districts will be affected, he said.

The floods, which swept through villages and farmland in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa last week, and then inundated Punjab, are the worst to hit Pakistan in 80 years, according to Unicef. More than 1,500 people died in the country’s northwest.

The area most at risk in Sindh lies in between the cities of Sukkur and Thatta, which are about 340 kilometers (210 miles) apart and where one million people in 2,000 villages may be affected, Kalwar said. The army has been deployed to help evacuate people.

Widespread monsoon rains are forecast in Sindh over the next two days, the weather office said in a statement on its web site.

Floodwaters demolished homes and bridges and swept away major roads across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab and crops across the nation were damaged. The floods first struck the western province of Baluchistan on July 22.

At least 1.8 million people urgently need regular food supplies, Amjad Jamal, a spokesman for the United Nations World Food Programme said by telephone from Peshawar today.

Crops Damaged

More than 1,000 villages in Punjab were flooded and more than 1 million acres of crops were damaged, Rizwan Ullah, director general of the Crisis Management Cell, said by telephone from Lahore. Communication networks have been disrupted and ground access is limited in the northwest because highways and roads have been destroyed, according to Unicef.

Children have been separated from their families or lost parents in the northwest, Save the Children said in a statement yesterday. Half the households have no remaining food supplies and 45 percent of communities are drinking contaminated water from rivers, ponds and lakes, it said.

Pakistani television networks showed survivors clinging to trees or debris in muddy, raging mountain rivers. Opposition leader Nawaz Sharif, a two-time prime minister, criticized President Asif Ali Zardari for pursuing a trip to France and the U.K. this week.
