Red Cross: Quake killed up to 50,000 in Haiti

Haiti Earthquake

This past Tuesday a magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti. This earthquake has forever changed Haiti. In addition to the obvious damage and loss of life this earthquake had effects that went beyond the obvious. The main prison was destroyed and 4000 prisoners took advantage of the situation and escaped. One of the links is an article from CNN that states a medical perfect storm could happen as a result of the quake. Haiti already has a high rate of infections from tropical and infectious diseases. Disruptions in the water supply can increase the risk of waterborne diseases.

Red Cross estimates put the number of deaths between 45,000 and 50,000. Stores have been looted and violence and frustration are setting in. Haiti was already one of the poorest countries in the world. A natural disaster of this magnitude is something that will take a very long time for them to recover from if they ever do. We cannot imagine what the people of Haiti are going through. One of the articles said one-third of the population was affected which is around 3 million people. We need to pray for the people of Haiti.
